We’ve featured Portland’s stunning luxury homes… now it’s time to dive deeper into the minds that create these home interiors. Today, we’ll be reviewing our favorite Portland-based and west coast interior design firms.

Guggenheim Architecture & Design Studio
Located in the PDX Historic Film Exchange Building
Guggenheim is the only studio we are featuring that is also a multidisciplinary firm for architecture, interior design and brand direction. Just like the Piece of PDX mission, Guggenheim gets to know every client, digging deep into their personality, and tailoring each project for a one-of-a-kind design.
In 2019, the Guggenheim team received multiple International Interior Design Association (IIDA) awards from the Oregon chapter. One award was for Avid Cider’s Portland location— a dark, mysterious design of blacks, bronze, brass, and greenery. During consultation, the Avid team describedthemselves as “the black sheep of the brewing industry, making cider. [We aim to] be different” and the Guggenheim design team translated this into an intimate, moody hangout.
As for the firm’s residential designs, we chose to feature their Parkdale Lone Fir project. The home itself sits on a 10-acre plot with a 360 degree view of Mt. Hood. The team translated the location and the family’s love for PNW landscape into a fir-clad interior. Founder Jeff Guggenheim said his inspiration came from local farm buildings. Take a look at the steel-edged stone fireplace! We are reeling over this design!
Picture your dream kitchen… What aesthetic fits your personality?
Clean, sleek, and white?
Urban inspired with brick and steel features?
Quaint and quirky farmhouse aesthetic?
Dark, moody, and glamorous?
We adoreKami Gray’s kitchen designs for their versatility. Browse her portfolio and you’ll clearly see how she customizes every element to her client’s personality. One of our favorite designs has to be the Lake Oswego Farmhouse kitchen remodel. From floor to ceiling, this design is sleek, quirky, and stunning. Check out those light fixtures, suspended from the vaulted ceilings. Yes, please!
We are traveling outside of Portland to Southern California to visit Urbanism Designs! The firm is conquering post-lockdown changes in the industry by designing virtually and operating remotely prior to installation. Designs are created with 3D rendering, so every element of the remodel can be approved without leaving the couch — we love the innovation! Urbanism’s projects are modern, inviting, and above all, creative.
The of Urbanism Designs, Erwin and Pamela, launched their business after the success of remodeling and designing the interior of their own home. They sharedthat friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers would show up on their doorstep, interested in their eye for design. From there, Erwin earned a Harvard sustainability certification and ensures his remodels are held to the highest standard of sustainability.
It was hard to choose a favorite design project to feature, but we settled on the Los Gatos Hills home. With a soaking pool overlooking the city and walls of windows letting in the SoCal sunshine, we can picture ourselves feeling rightat home.
Last but not least, we are featuring Penny Black Interiors and founder, Stewart Horner. Horner built his business around inspiring clients to embrace beauty in every aspect of their lives. The Penny Black mission is perfectly describedas:
“[A] commitment to lead you on a journey of discovery, to collaborate on a multi-sensory vision and together realize your personal idea of beauty”
This mission radiates through their designs — every element is precise and purposeful. Take a look at Project 16th, a living room and entryway remodel in the Portland Hills. The design is modern and elegant with dark textiles, a marble accent wall, and touches of bronze. The fireplace was built with a Shou Sugi Ban “torched wood” method. Simply, stunning!
Yet another reason we adore the west coast — Portland and beyond is home to creative minds and innovative designers. Don’t forget to leave a comment below and share your favorite featured design!
